Nurses moving onto a monitored floor are often handed a rhythm they can feel is wrong but cannot name, and a monitor that alarms at artifact as readily as at a real change. Naming the rhythm confidently, and telling a true change from a lead that has come loose, is a learnable method rather than a talent. This course teaches the method and drills it.
It is recognition taught as an assessed skill, in the same spirit as the deterioration course. You learn to read a strip systematically, to name the common rhythms, and to state what your facility expects you to escalate and document. It is not a treatment course: it does not teach what drug or intervention a given rhythm needs, and it is not an ACLS certification. You finish with a validation performed against a checklist rather than a certificate for attending.
What you will be able to do
- Read any rhythm strip with the same systematic method every time: rate, regularity, P waves, the PR interval, and the QRS.
- Recognize and name the common rhythms seen on a monitor, including normal sinus and its variations, atrial fibrillation and flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, the common AV blocks, and the ventricular rhythms.
- Identify the ventricular rhythms that cannot wait, and state exactly what your unit expects you to do to escalate and document, per its own protocol.
- Tell artifact and a loose lead apart from a genuine rhythm change, so you neither ignore a real event nor call a rapid response for a movement artifact.
- Explain electrode placement and why a poorly placed lead produces a misleading trace.
- Describe the difference between a rhythm-recognition skill and a diagnostic 12-lead reading, and where each one belongs.
How the four hours are spent
- The monitored patientWhat the monitor is actually measuring, correct electrode placement, and how a lead problem becomes a false alarm.
- The systematic methodRate, regularity, P waves, PR interval and QRS, applied in the same order to every strip until it is automatic.
- Sinus rhythmsNormal sinus and its variations, and using them as the baseline against which everything else is read.
- Atrial rhythms and blocksAtrial fibrillation, flutter, supraventricular tachycardia and the common AV blocks, recognized by their pattern rather than memorized in isolation.
- The ventricular rhythms that cannot waitRecognizing them fast, and what recognition triggers: escalation and documentation as your facility protocol defines them, not a treatment algorithm.
- Artifact versus a real changeThe traces that look alarming and are not, and the subtle ones that are, drilled on a mixed strip set.
- Skills validationStrip interpretation performed under observation against a checklist you receive beforehand, because assessment should not be a surprise.
What this course rests on. The teaching is anchored to published standards rather than personal habit: the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses practice alerts on bedside cardiac monitoring and alarm management, and the rhythm terminology and recognition conventions of the American Heart Association. It teaches recognition only; treatment algorithms and the AHA's Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification are a separate programme delivered by AHA-authorised training centers.
Where a facility's own monitoring policy, alarm settings or escalation pathway differ from anything taught here, the facility's protocol governs, and we say so during the session rather than leaving you to discover it.

What is not included
- Treatment of a rhythm. What a given rhythm needs is a clinical decision made under your facility's protocol and scope, not taught here.
- ACLS certification. That is a separate AHA programme through an authorised training center.
- Diagnostic 12-lead interpretation for identifying ischaemia or infarction.
- Continuing education contact hours, unless your facility arranges them separately.
Prepare before you come
These are free and take about twenty minutes. Arriving comfortable with vital signs and structured escalation means the session is spent on strips rather than on groundwork.
